Tenant Organizer, Contra Costa County
Betty is a Concord/Contra Costa County tenant organizer; Betty was born in Acapulco, México. Her family emigrated to Los Angeles, California, when she was 13 yrs old, and she has been a Contra Costa resident for 22 yrs. For the last six years, Betty has been fighting for tenant protections like rent stabilization and just cause and safe and habitable housing for families in Concord.
Having suffered from landlord harassment, retaliation, and eviction, she has devoted herself to assisting and advocating directly for Concord tenants. She served as an official tenant alternate on the Concord Residential Rent Review Panel from April 2018 to November 2018.
As part of her work in 2019, she founded the Todos Santos Tenants Union––the first city-wide tenants union in Contra Costa County––to empower Concord tenants by providing them with information about their rights and empowering them to stand up for dignity and respect. Betty is a single mom of a thirteen-year-old daughter.
